Introducing: "The People's Piano" at Orange Grove

September 20th, 2018

We have something new and exciting in our halls! Introducing: “The People’s Piano.” This new edition to Orange Grove has quickly become the new hangout place for our individuals, staff, and visitors.

Lessons... practice... talent? No need! This piano is an open invitation to play a tune or just slide your fingers up and down those ivory keys.

Dr. Rick Rader, the Director of the Habilitation Center at Orange Grove was in Ireland for a healthcare meeting. At the Dublin train center he saw an upright piano that was designated as a piano that anyone, regardless of talent, could play. He thought this was a great idea and was inspired to replicate it when he returned to Orange Grove.

A piano was donated by colleagues Gail Walker and Carolyn Brown. Dr. Rader engaged Orange Grove's Karsten Richards, an artist and a DSP in the Children's Program and the "decorating" began.

The final product was set up in the atrium and has been a great hit. Staffers, visitors, and individuals are stopping to play, imagine they can play, pretend to play, try to play and actually play.
