Congratulations to Brandy Wilson (far right), Coordinator for Orange Grove’s Recreation Department, and Teresa Jenkins (left), Recreation Assistant, for being recognized by Governor Phil Bredesen with the 2009 Shining Star Award.
They, along with Outdoor Chattanooga,
United Way of Greater Chattanooga, the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, and WDEF News 12, were awarded for their efforts in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The award is given by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health in the areas of Where We Live (communities), Work (employers), and Learn (educational settings). Orange Grove received the Where We Learn award for Water Ballet. The program started in August of 2008, serves both children and adults, and allows participants to work out with very little stress or strain on their joints.
The program is in accordance with the guidelines of the State Board of Education’s Health-Related Physical Fitness Policy, in which cardio-respiratory endurance is increased, as well as muscle strength and flexibility from the movements.
According to their website, the Tennessee Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health was created to address the health and fitness needs of all Tennesseans through the promotion of healthy lifestyles. The council recognizes that to be successful in affecting a change in the lifestyle habits of Tennesseans, a cooperative effort will be required of government agencies, businesses, communities, and individuals that share the goal of enhancing the quality of life in
Tennessee through the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
